The University of L’Aquila and its Department for Architecture and Urban Development has been performing research especially in the fields of architectural projecting, building, history of architecture and restoring, urban planning, transport engineering and topography for several years.

In matters of urban planning, the Department carried out studies and analyses of institutional planning with special attention to urban requalification, sustainable development and sound organisation of public transport. Main topic is the integration of the transport system in a setting of the medieval urban environment of L’Aquila with several listed buildings and the connections to and from the surroundings. The Department’s staff focussed their research on urban and transport planning as well as on non-conventional, high-speed transport means, especially the development of equipment for magnetically levitating trains, “Remote Sensing” Security systems and the application of foamed bitumen for recycling street tarmac.

The university will work in all five work packages and closely cooperate with the City of L’Aquila in order to achieve complementary effects.
