City of Sibiu, Romania

The City of Sibiu was the former capital of the region of Transilvania and together with Luxembourg it has been selected as the European Cultural Capital for 2007. The awareness that the organization of traffic is an important issue has resulted in the acceptance of a technical assistance for the development and implementation of a sustainable urban transport strategy. The new transport strategy already resulted in the implementation of various measures in the historical centre like the extension of pedestrian areas, residential parking, and restrictions for motorised traffic. An efficient parking management has been established in the responsibility of the urban department for administration of the public parking spaces. It is planned by the city of Sibiu to extend the transport strategy and parking management from the historical centre to other parts of the city. The substantial economic growth of the city resulted in a sharp increase in motorisation and road traffic problems. On the other hand public transport shows a low service level with a lack of customer orientation. To face the future challenges in transportation, the municipality is highly interested to qualify its staff and get international support at high quality level.

The City of Sibiu will work in all five technical work packages.
